Italian Classical Music by Carlo R Baggelli

Carlo Robelli is perhaps best recognized for his cello work, but did you know that he also composed an opera? This was noted in the obituary of him given in Gertrude Stein’s book Piano Lessons. Although his musical tastes had broadened, he continued to be extremely interested in music and would often request piano lessons. His interest in music came through as his parents encouraged him to pursue it. The result was the wonderful music of which The Magic Mountain is a masterpiece.

Another of Carlo Robelli’s cello compositions is entitled Salle du jour. It is a famous piece of operatic rediscovery and was composed during the final years of his life. The piece includes a large number of stylistic flourishes and uses multiple types of cello horns to enhance its brilliance. Unlike other modern cello compositions in which the melody is played on a single string instrument, this piece utilizes multiple horns and piano accompaniment. It was again presented at the 2021 Academy Awards, which is a rare award for an opera or a cello piece.

Another of Carlo Ro Baggelli’s cello compositions is entitled Deserte. It was released in 1950 and again was presented at the Academy Awards. In this piece, the main theme is the death of a popular Italian political leader. The cellist in this piece is Guido Barbante. Barbante was an important cellist who worked with Ettore Camerini and Mario Lanza.

Another great piece of Carlo Ro Baggelli cello compositions is La parole date. This is an opera concerning the life of a condemned woman sentenced to death by the emperor for her involvement in the affair with her stepson. The piece is rather dramatic at times. It uses a large amount of orchestra and choir accompaniment. As is evident in the first movement of the opera, when the couple first enter the stadium to meet each other, there is a huge fireworks display.

Finally, a smaller orchestral piece entitled Amoroso was composed by Carlo Ro Baggelli during the period of mid-1960’s. In this piece, Ro Baggelli composed some highly regarded music, including a major piece for string orchestra called Il tro varico. The use of strings is very strong throughout this piece. As a side note, Amoroso is not really a string orchestra composition, but it can easily be considered as one because the central theme is a string quartet.

Of course, this is not to say that these are all his works. He also wrote several wonderful cello operas such as La Trattoria Della Madonina and Il tro varico. Furthermore, he also wrote choral pieces such as Requiem of Novato. Overall, he has created a very impressive cello repertoire. Nowadays, whenever a new generation of cellists hears his name, they will know who he is and what he accomplished.
