On July 4th, 1776, a pivotal moment in history unfolded, forever changing the world. This was the day when America declared independence from Great Britain, liberating its 13 colonies from the rule of King George III. Tensions had been escalating between the colonies and Britain for years, fueled by unjust trade practices and taxes imposed by the British parliament. The famous Boston Tea Party of 1773 exemplified the growing discontent among colonists. Subsequently, as pressure mounted from the British authorities, the colonists united and established a Continental Congress to organize their resistance. The early stages of rebellion culminated in the significant battles of Lexington and Concord, setting the stage for the American Revolution.
During the early years of the American Revolution, a notable figure emerged as a key influencer in the country's separation from Britain. Thomas Paine, a true patriot, demonstrated his beliefs through his powerful writings rather than through the use of weapons on the battlefield. Born in 1737, Paine immigrated to America at the age of 37 with the assistance of Benjamin Franklin, just in time for the Revolutionary War. Referred to as The Father of the American Revolution, Paine gained fame for his pamphlets advocating for independence from British rule, most notably his work titled "Common Sense," published on January 10, 1776. Despite signing it as "by an Englishman," the pamphlet sold over 100,000 copies in the first three months and more than 500,000 throughout the Revolution. So impactful was "Common Sense" that John Adams remarked, “Without the pen of the author of Common Sense, the sword of Washington would have been raised in vain.”
Thomas Edison wrote…
“We by no means had a sounder intelligence on this Republic. He was the equal of Washington in making American liberty potential. The place Washington carried out Paine devised and wrote. The deeds of 1 within the Weld have been matched by the deeds of the opposite together with his pen. I think about Paine our biggest political thinker. As we’ve not superior, and maybe by no means shall advance, past the Declaration and Structure, so Paine has had no successors who prolonged his ideas. Though the current era is aware of little of Paine’s writings, and though he has virtually no affect upon modern thought, People of the long run will justly appraise his work. I’m sure of it.”
The affect and patriotism of Thomas Paine has pale over the many years. It’s our hope that this ‘pocket version’ might assist to reignite the love and hope he and different founding fathers had for the American expertise.
