David Hamilton Jackson: Editor of The HERALD Newspaper in the US Virgin Islands

David Hamilton Jackson played a vital role in advancing civil rights and workers' rights in the US Virgin Islands. He was a key figure in the island's quest for greater freedoms and fair treatment, making his mark as an influential advocate for change.

When the islands were under Danish rule, David Hamilton Jackson journeyed to Denmark to advocate for improved living conditions for the working class on the Virgin Islands.

He particularly addressed the problems of:

1. Reducing the toddler mortality fee
2. The development of hygienic situations of the hospitals
3. The repeal of a 1779 legislation which prohibited unbiased newspapers
4. The necessity for academics to obtain greater salaries and
5. US citizenship for all Virgin Islanders

In 1915, David Hamilton Jackson founded The Virgin Islands' first free newspaper, known as The Herald. Through his influential editorial column, Jackson became a champion for the working class, inspiring and leading them towards progress.

November 1st is widely known as an annual vacation in his honor as Liberty Day or David Hamilton Jackson Day .
