The U.S. Constitution, adopted on September 17, 1787, by the Constitutional Convention in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and later ratified by state conventions, is a foundational document known as "The People." It has been amended twenty-seven times, with the initial ten amendments called the Bill of Rights. The Articles of Confederation and Perpetual Union served as the first constitution of the United States. Upon ratification by nine states, the U.S. Constitution replaced the Articles of Confederation as the governing law. This document holds a central role in American law and political tradition. The original handwritten version, known as the "engrossed" document penned by Jacob Shallus, is exhibited at the National Archives and Records Administration in Washington, D.C.
