Benedictine Tips for a Blessed Life

Many individuals have found that the Benedictine Rule offers valuable guidance for leading a fulfilling and blessed life. This ancient set of principles focuses on fostering personal growth and community well-being.
In his latest book, following the success of "The Rule of Benedict for Newbies," Will Derkse delves into the key attitudes and virtues that define Benedictine spirituality. This sequel aims to make these principles accessible to individuals outside the monastery setting. The book explores the importance of cultivating silence, practicing thoughtful speech, embracing humility as a form of courage in service, prioritizing work and learning, nurturing hospitality, care, and stewardship, as well as fostering mutual respect and using positive language. These attitudes serve as the foundation for a life that is truly blessed by God.
Will Derkse, a devoted husband and father of two adult daughters, is affiliated with the Benedictine St. Willibrord’s Abbey in Doetinchem, The Netherlands, as an oblate. With a background in chemistry and philosophy, he has shared his knowledge at various educational institutions. Since 2001, he has been leading the Soeterbeeck Program for Science, Society, and Worldviews at Radboud University in Nijmegen. In addition to his role as a director, Will holds the esteemed Andreas van Melsen Chair at the university, embodying a truly rich and blessed life in service of others.
